Developmental Editing

This can be known as structural editing, substantive editing, or content editing. Whatever you want to call it, this focuses on the overall structure, content, and flow of a manuscript.

I’m here to go through the book to pick out any wider issues or places you can amp up your story on the below points:

  • Pacing concerns
  • Plot holes
  • Thematic stumbles
  • Overall structure
  • Setting
  • Characterization issues
The purpose of a dev edit is to have a professional set of eyes on your document that will help with the big picture concerns. This edit will always retain the author’s voice throughout the book. At the end of the day, you’ve written it, so you get the final say on what you use or don’t use.
Takeaways
  • Your manuscript document with many many comments and tracked changes
  • My extensive report detailing my observations while editing your book. This includes a mini book map of character descriptions, backgrounds, and relationships
  • A style sheet that records decisions about language preference/style, big-picture elements, and formatting and layout
  • 1 hour coaching session to talk through feedback
